Condesa

Soho of Mexico City

Condesa

Condesa, or ‘La Condesa’, is a fashionable neighbourhood adjacent to the extensive greenery of Chapultepec Park, and a district often described as the Soho of Mexico City.  Although the area is mostly residential, it’s popular with the young business and creative set and is a great destination for a night out with plenty of world-class restaurants and nightclubs.

Condesa is also a delightful area to wander around, being one of the best-preserved Art Deco neighbourhoods in the world. Small enough to explore on foot and with more trees than any other urban part of the city, a day in Condesa can be spent walking the shady streets, admiring the Aztec-inspired Art Deco architecture, and stopping occasionally to browse a bookstore or have a coffee. If you’re not a fan of getting lost, why not take a walking tour that starts from Parque Mexico and takes you along some of the finest Art Deco streets in Condesa?

Parks

The district of Condesa incorporates two beautiful city parks; Parque Mexico and Parque España. Considered as the centre of the neighbourhood, Parque Mexico is somewhat different in design to the many other city parks in Mexico City. It began life as a horse racing track and was developed into a permanent green space when Condesa grew around it in the 1920s.

Parque Mexico is a great place to wander around and get a feel for the neighbourhood – it regularly hosts cultural events and gatherings and is seen as a trendy place to meet for a chat.

Dining and Nightlife

Condesa is a very safe place to be at night and one of the best neighbourhoods in the city for drinking and dining. Fusion cuisine has become very popular here, with several international restaurants competing to woo the tourists and locals alike. You’ll be spoilt for choice with the range of bars and clubs in the area; some of the best-being rooftop venues where you can enjoy a drink under the stars. Be aware however that if you’re out at night in Condesa it’s very easy to get lost due to the confusing layout of the roads and the lack of streetlights!

Getting Around

Reach the district of Condesa easily by metro, with the nearest station being Chilpancingo. Once there, either wander around on foot, or rent an Ecobici bicycle – there are sharing stations all over the neighbourhood, and it’s a great chance to take advantage of the service that’s only provided in certain areas of Mexico City.
