Embark on a full-day adventure starting with a 6:00 AM departure from Palenque. Travel to the Corozal border and enjoy a 40-minute boat ride along the Usumacinta River, the natural border between Mexico and Guatemala. Keep an eye out for vibrant bird species such as toucans and macaws, and possibly spot crocodiles along the way. Arrive at the mystical Yaxchilán Archaeological Zone, an important Mayan city from the late classic period (600-900 AD). Surrounded by lush jungle and towering ceiba trees, Yaxchilán is renowned for its impressive stone sculptures, including stelae and lintels. Spend three hours exploring the site, taking in the rich history and natural beauty. Next, visit the Bonampak Archaeological Area, known for its stunning polychrome murals that date back to 790 AD. These murals, found inside a temple with three rooms, offer a vivid glimpse into ancient Mayan life.
