COVID-19 – Mexico Updates

The guideline that Mexico has taken in the face of the pandemic is given by a system called "Epidemiological Risk Stoplight", it is a monitoring system designed to regulate the use of public space and the respective opening of socioeconomic activities.

The indicators and methodology are the same for the 32 federative entities of the country, regulating in a state way according to the level of population risk and the increase or decrease of the local epidemic activity, as well as the appropriate sanitary security measures for the reopening of the activities.

Valid from June 7 to 20, using four colors:

Red (maximum health alert):

  • No state is governed by these regulations as of the date.

  • Only essential economic activities will be allowed, and people will also be allowed to walk around their homes during the day.

  • Public spaces remain closed, only sanitation and cleaning work is allowed.

  • Public transport admits the maximum occupancy limit of 50%, as long as it complies with the sanitation measures, healthy distance, and mandatory mask.

  • In private cars, the maximum is 3 people per vehicle

  • The activities that concern areas of the State Government serve only those that are necessary to directly address the health contingency and those involved in public safety.

  • Currently, no state is in red.

Orange (high risk):

  • Baja California Sur, Quintana Roo, Tabasco and Yucatan are the current states under this regulation.

  • Classes remain suspended.

  • Non-essential economic activities allowed working at 30%.

  • Open public spaces with a small number of people.

Yellow (intermediate risk):

  • Sonora, Sinaloa and Veracruz, Baja California, Chihuahua, Nuevo León, Tamaulipas, Colima and Campeche are the current states under this regulation.

  • Permitted work activities caring for people at risk.

  • Public space opens regularly.

  • Closed open space with reduced capacity.

Green (low risk):

  • Zacatecas, Nayarit, Michoacán, Puebla, Mexico City and the State of Mexico, Coahuila, Durango, San Luis Potosí, Aguascalientes, Jalisco, Guanajuato, Querétaro, Hidalgo, Tlaxcala, Guerrero, Oaxaca and Chiapas are the current states under this regulation.

  • All permitted activities, including school activities, in strict adherence to the necessary measures, alignments, protocols, and restrictions.

We invite the population to be aware of the color of the traffic light that your community or locality has and to attend to the indications of the federal and local health authorities. Failure to do so runs the risk that in places where epidemic activity is not substantially increased, the epidemic may emerge abruptly, imposing stricter measures.
